It’s a funny thing, running a family business. Like any of the other familial characteristics where we can argue “nature vs. nurture,” it seems as though it’s either in your blood or it isn’t. In the late 60’s when Mark Hancock was being taken around to job sites by his parents, Camelot Homes founders J.W Hancock and his wife Maggi, he already had an affinity for building. “I’ve enjoyed the creativity of homebuilding since my first memory of it,” said Camelot Homes president Mark Hancock, “I love the entire process. For me it isn’t work. I’m looking for design inspirations wherever I am, having dinner in a friend’s home, when we’re traveling or anywhere I see something beautiful. It truly is what I love to do.” And he has been doing it well for close to 40 years. Mark and his wife Julie, as co-owners of Camelot Homes have managed to weather the current economic storm, maintaining their place as one of the premier builders of luxury homes in Arizona. Coming out at the other end is really a case of that which does not kill you makes you stronger. “The housing market is cyclical. It’s the nature of the business we’re in, but we use the down times to re-focus on what truly is most important to us; our family.”
With history repeating itself, Cammie Beckert the Hancock’s eldest of three children, was also drawn to homebuilding from the beginning. Cammie, now the mother of her own two boys, is the acting Director Of Sales And Marketing, working side by side with her parents. “The business of homebuilding lends itself to being a family endeavor.” offered Cammie, “With so many opportunities for all personality types, it’s something that brings us all together, creatively. It really is a business that is ideal for families.”
Now this isn’t to say that working together every day comes without challenges. “When Mark and I were first married we implemented the ’96th Street rule’.” said Julie, in reference to the family home which was located on 99th Street. “We agreed that all talk of business would end at 96th street. By the time we arrived at home for the evening we were back to being just a husband and wife.” Learning to switch hats at the end of the day is obviously working. Having just celebrated their 30th anniversary, they continue to love working together, playing together and spending blissful time with their children and grandchildren.
Whether or not the grandchildren have the building gene is anyone’s guess. Only time will tell…
